VERRA METHODOLOGY CHANGE AND REQUANTIFICATION

Transition your carbon projects to the latest methodologies, ensure high quality and integrity, and maximize the value of your carbon credits.

Projects under the Verra Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program can voluntarily request a requantification to update their projects to new methodologies, or new versions of methodologies. We offer Validation and Verification services for methodology change and requantification, for project developers looking to upgrade their projects.

METHODOLOGY CHANGE & REQUANTIFICATION

For project developers seeking to update the methodology of existing carbon credits with the new methodology for past monitoring and verification periods.

This process includes:

- Assessment of the updated Project Description, Reduction and Removal Calculation sheet, and the Requantification Report

- Updated project description validation

- Requantification Report verification

METHODOLOGY CHANGE AT VERIFICATION

For project developers who choose to undergo a methodology change for future carbon credits only. This is done during the Verification process and will only apply to future credits issued after the methodology update, leaving existing credits within the old methodology.

This process requires:

- Preparing an updated Project Description

- Preparing a Reduction and Removal Calculation sheet in line with the new methodology.

WHY UPDATE THE METHODOLOGY?

Verra’s Methodology Change and Requantification Procedure allows VCS Program projects to update methodologies used in past verification periods, align previous monitoring and verification reports with updated methodology versions, and requantify greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions and removals from past periods.

Verra has submitted this procedure for review to the ICVCM as a VCS Program update. Pending approval, project developers can:

- Request Core Carbon Principles (CCPs) labels for reconciled Verified Carbon Units (VCUs).
- Access New Markets:  by issuing credits that meet the requirements for broader market eligibility.
- Reconcile Past Credits: Requantify reductions and removals from previous monitoring periods and ensure your VCUs meet current best practice.

THE PROCESS

1. REVISE PROJECT DOCUMENTATION

Prepare a revised version of the project description using the most recent effective VCS Project Description Template.

2. ADDRESS MONITORING REPORT UPDATES

Ensure the monitoring report includes a description and justification for any project description deviations (Section 3.2) and a description and justification for project baseline reassessment, if applicable (Section 3.4).

3. UPDATE EMISSIONS CALCULATIONS

Prepare an updated ex-ante GHG emission reduction and carbon dioxide removal calculation spreadsheet, covering either the baseline validity period or the entire crediting period, as applicable.
