Scope 3 Research Report

A publication from SustainCERT presenting findings from a 2023 study of 500 large organizations in the US and Europe on Scope 3 emissions reporting, interventions, and verification.

Why download this publication?

Scope 3 emissions account for around 70% of corporate greenhouse gas inventories, yet they remain the hardest to measure and reduce. This publication combines quantitative data and qualitative insights to map the current landscape of corporate Scope 3 action, and to identify the barriers and opportunities ahead.

It provides technically rigorous yet practical guidance to help organizations:

  • Understand how companies are reporting on Scope 3 today, and how prepared they feel for upcoming regulation.
  • Learn how science-based targets are driving interventions, and how companies are approaching investments to reduce or remove emissions.
  • See why third-party verification is increasingly viewed as critical for credibility in Scope 3 reporting, even though adoption is not yet universal.
  • Navigate persistent challenges: data quality and availability, risks of double counting or freeriding, high project costs, and lack of clear guidance.
  • Explore the role of collaboration and digital verification solutions in scaling credible Scope 3 action across value chains.
