What is the Value Change Initiative?

The Value Change Initiative (VCI) is a multi-stakeholder forum designed to make net-zero value chains possible by 2050. It brings together companies, civil society, and leading climate frameworks to co-create and share best practice for accounting and reporting value chain (Scope 3) emission reductions and removals.

Through working groups, labs, and collaborative pilots, VCI helps members overcome barriers, test practical solutions, and develop consensus guidance that is widely referenced across industries.

VCI in practice

VCI’s work is organized into collaborative spaces where members test solutions and co-develop guidance:

  • Sector Working Groups – such as Food & Agriculture and Apparel & Footwear.
  • Innovation Labs – including the Emission Factor Lab and Data Lab.
  • The Market-Based Instruments Program – addressing credibility and integrity in value chain interventions.

These initiatives ensure that companies not only measure Scope 3 emissions, but also reduce them in ways that are scalable, verifiable, and aligned with global standards.

Why it matters

Scope 3 emissions typically represent 75%–90% of a company’s footprint. Yet, they are the hardest to act on. The Value Change Initiative offers a trusted space to:

  • Build common, consensus-based guidance.
  • Share knowledge with peers and experts.
  • Demonstrate credible progress toward climate commitments.
